Is Pneumonia Contagious?Different Kinds of Pneumonia Causes

There are a lot of people who know that pneumonia is one of the conditions that exist at the present time. It is the inflammation of the lung tissues although it is not only caused by viruses, infection, and bacteria.  There may still be other causes that can develop into a full-blown condition. People who are suffering from pneumonia usually find it hard to breathe because their air sacs usually become filled with pus.

Possible Causes of Pneumonia

There are different causes of pneumonia. Like mentioned earlier, it is not only entirely caused by viruses, infections, and bacteria. There are other types of pneumonia that are also caused by fungus. Some may also develop pneumonia because of their constant exposure to chemical products that are bad for the body.

Different Kinds of Pneumonia

There are different kinds of pneumonia that are available such as the following:

  • Single Pneumonia – This is what you call pneumonia that only affects one lung.
  • Double Pneumonia – This is what you call pneumonia that affects both lungs.
  • Lobar Pneumonia – This is what you call a type of pneumonia that affects only a lobe of the lungs.

There are times when pneumonia will only start with one lobe or one lung but because treatments were not taken immediately, pneumonia would start to spread and worsen. Pneumonia will not suddenly go away on its own. Some treatments are needed in order to cure the condition.

Symptoms of Pneumonia

There are different symptoms that you may begin to feel when you have pneumonia such as the following:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Weakness
  • Exhaustion
  • Chills

It is evident that these are common symptoms that people may also feel when they are suffering from other conditions. This is the reason why getting yourself checked immediately after feeling these symptoms is recommended.

Is Pneumonia Contagious? How Contagious is Pneumonia

Is Pneumonia Contagious

Some people tend to become confused with how contagious pneumonia is probably because this disease may turn deadly easily. It would all depend on the type of pneumonia that a person has. There are some types of pneumonia that can attack people easily because of their weak immune system.

There are several factors that may affect how strong pneumonia can possibly be like for instance, those who are not treated earlier may have a higher risk of having more serious types of pneumonia while those who are older may also find it harder to recover. How strong people’s immune systems are will also have an effect on the severity of pneumonia that people will get to experience.

Some of the most common types of contagious pneumonia are the following:

  • Bacterial Pneumonia
  • Viral Pneumonia
  • Mycoplasma Pneumonia
  • Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Pneumonia

Bacterial Pneumonia

Bacterial Pneumonia obviously a type of pneumonia brought about by bacteria. The severity of the condition will highly depend on the bacteria that target the lungs. Strong bacteria usually cause highly severe problems. There are two types of bacterial pneumonia. The first one is Community-Acquired Pneumonia or (CAP) and Streptococcus Pneumonia.

For CAP, this is a type of pneumonia that may be received due to the setting that people will become exposed to. If you breathe in droplets from coughs and sneezes, you may develop pneumonia as well.

For Streptococcus Pneumonia, on the other hand, this is a type of pneumonia that may be caused by a type of bacteria that may live in the nose and throat. The bacteria may be able to penetrate the lungs.

Viral Pneumonia

The main cause of having viral pneumonia is because of simple colds and flu that have elevated because treatments were not done immediately. When the virus enters the lungs, this can make the lungs become inflamed and people will find it harder to breathe.

Viral Pneumonia usually occurs because of another condition. For instance, those who have chickenpox have a higher chance of having this type of pneumonia. There are also some who get pneumonia because of being stricken by adenoviruses. People may catch viral pneumonia easily if they would touch or have skin to skin contact with people who have this type of pneumonia.

One type of strong pneumonia that has managed to kill a lot of people is SARS. This is a type of virus that may start out as something similar to a common cold but as it progresses, it becomes even stronger and the condition may worsen over time. This type of virus was first discovered in the year 2003. There are a lot of people who have died because of this condition. While it was more prevalent during the early 2000s, there are still a few cases of this type of viral pneumonia being reported at present time.

Mycoplasma Pneumonia

This is the type of pneumonia that is hard to diagnose because it does not make itself apparent in the beginning. It is only when it is already in its advanced stage that it will be detected. This can be a big problem so being checked often is necessary. The good thing about this type of pneumonia is that it is mild although it may get transferred from one person to another.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Pneumonia

This is the type of pneumonia that is usually resistant to various types of medication. This type of bacteria may live on the skin and even on the nose but they may cause some problems after some time. Do remember that this type of pneumonia can become even more resistant to a medication when antibiotics are not used properly.

Other Types of Pneumonia

Types of Pneumonia

Other than the main types of pneumonia that are mentioned above, there are still other types of pneumonia that may not be that popular such as walking pneumonia. This is similar to bacterial pneumonia but the main difference is that it is not as strong as the usual bacteria available. Walking pneumonia may have the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Dry Cough
  • Fatigue

There are times when people who experience this type of pneumonia may also experience rash, diarrhea and even sore throat.

Fungal Pneumonia

This is another type of pneumonia available. There are a few types of fungi that may cause pneumonia. Even breathing in these fungi when you have a strong immune system will not really cause any problems because these fungi are available in the air. You will only have a problem with this when you have a problematic and weak immune system.

There are some symptoms that may be felt like the following:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Fever

There are a lot of people who experience fungal pneumonia whose conditions progress immediately because of their weak immune systems. Some people who already have serious conditions may get this type of pneumonia. This explains why people who have weakened immune systems are recommended to wear masks or to isolate themselves.

Some Complications from Pneumonia

You have to remember that when you have pneumonia, you will immediately begin to feel different but you might disregard it as something that may come and go like a cold or flu. If you have been having problems for quite a long period of time, then you should go to the doctor immediately.

The doctor will usually do an initial test which means that you have to breathe in and out while the doctor places a stethoscope on your chest. One of the signs that you actually have pneumonia is when a sort of crackling sound becomes heard whenever you breathe. If in case you test positive for this, the next tests that you have to do are the following:

  • Chest X-Ray
  • Blood Test
  • Physical Exam

After all of the tests are done, that is the time when the type of pneumonia you have will be determined.  You have to remember that when your pneumonia is untreated, there is a big chance that you will get a lot of complications in the long run.

Pneumonia in Children

Pneumonia in Children

If there are a lot of people who are having a hard time recovering when they have pneumonia, just imagine how hard it can be for children. There are children who die every year because of different types of pneumonia. The reason why more children die from pneumonia than adults is mainly because their symptoms are not that obvious. Most adults assume that their children are simply suffering from simple problems.

If you suspect that your child has pneumonia, you need to contact your doctor immediately so that a series of tests will be done. Also, be aware of the various symptoms that your child might start to show. You cannot expect that your child will not be well enough to just stay in bed. There may be times when they will act strong but actually, they are already having some troubles. Remember that there are some children who may become more prone to having pneumonia when they are exposed to other children who also have the condition.
